Sivakumar Appointed Siemon Sales Manager for Middle East and North Africa

Siemon, the global network infrastructure specialist, has promoted Iyer Sivakumar, (Siva), to sales manager for the extended region of Middle East and North Africa.

Following (three) very successful years growing Siemon’s business in the Middle East Siva will now drive the business forward across the whole region.

In this newly created role – which recognises the economic importance of the Middle East and North African region, Siva will be supported by business development manager, Prem Rodrigues and technical manager Narender Vasandari providing local technical support.

Siva joined Siemon in December 2008 from a Dubai-based online networking distribution company where he specialised in structured cabling and was responsible for UAE, Upper and Lower Gulf and KSA.

Since joining Siemon he has expanded the company’s channel in the Middle East, recruited a number of partner companies to join Siemon’s Certified Installer programme – as well as working with value added resellers (VARs). He has also worked hard to increase consultant and end users relationships in the IT and networking markets all over ME.

Appointing Siva to the new regional role, Steven Foster – managing director EMEA with Siemon said “Siva came to us with a great pedigree and has made a massive impact to our Middle East business – we’re now looking forward to him using his perfect mix of skill and market understanding to continue this throughout the region.”

Volex launches RF coil cable production for healthcare equipment in China

Volex plc, the global provider of electrical, digital and optical cabling and interconnect solutions, has commenced the production of radio frequency (RF) coil cable assemblies at  its factory in Suzhou, China for use in  magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. The factory was awarded the ISO 13485  standard for quality management systems in the manufacturing of medical devices earlier this year.

This move comes in response to the growing demand for components for medical imaging devices globally. Many of Volex’s customers, some of the world’s leading manufacturers of healthcare equipment, already manufacture in China. By adding RF coil cable to the product range made in Suzhou Volex is taking another step to strengthen existing partnerships with its OEM customers in the medical device industry. Developing and manufacturing RF coil cables in Asia will also enable Volex to provide consultancy and design services locally.

“Having RF coil cable assemblies in our portfolio here in China is giving us more flexibility to react quickly to changing requirements of our customers throughout Asia”, says John Conroy, VP Healthcare at Volex. “The additional production capacity underlines the company’s commitment to growing our business in this sector and region.

Brand-Rex wins Scotland’s VIBES Environmental Management Award

‘The greenest large company in Scotland” might be a fitting description for Brand-Rex the international data network infrastructure and cabling company following its winning of the VIBES (vision in business for the environment of Scotland) Management Awards on 29th November 2011.

Announcing the award, Jim Campbell, Projects and Commercial Director for FMC Technologies, last year’s winner said: “The winner of the VIBES Management Award in the large business category, Brand-Rex, was selected by the final judging panel due to their entire life-cycle approach to reducing their business impacts; from their raw materials through to the final product. This holistic approach has provided benefits not only to the business, but also to their customers and the wider global community.”

VIBES is a partnership between Environmental Protection UK the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, the Scottish Government and Zero Waste Scotland. Awarded annually, the VIBES Management Award is the most prestigious, recognising businesses that take significant steps to improve or reduce their environmental impact and whose management systems deliver continuous improvement in environmental performance.

Barely over the dividing line from medium size business to large business, Brand-Rex was up against formidable competition from major companies like Amey construction, Chivas Regal, Shell, Robert Wiseman Dairies and Edinburgh Airport.

Receiving the VIBES Management Award, Brand-Rex CEO, Paul Lines said; “This is an honour and fantastic recognition for my team’s dedication, globally, to reducing our carbon footprint. They have made it a way of life at Brand-Rex and their efforts took us to become the first company to achieve carbon neutral status – on a global scale – to the new PAS2060 standard.”

Lines continued, “I would like to make a call to all business CEOs that they too should aggressively take up carbon reduction because, contrary to popular belief, if it’s properly done it doesn’t cost money, it actually adds to the bottom line at the same time as protecting the planet for our grand-children.”

The judges, who spent time grilling the management at the  Brand-Rex headquarters were particularly impressed with the company’s vision and innovation including the replacement of conventional ‘always-on’ factory lighting with daylight and intelligent top-up low energy electric light; replacing the factory’s fuel-oil by natural gas (saving £78,000 per quarter in the process); and by the Brand-Rex social responsibility in choosing offset programmes in the countries most impacted by the company’s raw materials sourcing.

For example, a land-fill methane flaring project in Chile – where the copper for their cables is mined and a hydro-dam project in Turkey where the copper is purified.

Over the preceding year, Brand-Rex increased production by 29 million metres of cable but still turned-in an overall carbon footprint reduction of 141 tonnes. An equivalent saving of 1330 tonnes compared to pre-improvement figures.

Ruggedised Armoured Cable added to Siemon’s MTP Plug and Play Fibre Range

Global network infrastructure specialist Siemon, today announced the addition of armoured cable options to its comprehensive line-up of high-performance MTP-based plug and play fibre cable assemblies.

Available in 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s capable OM3 and OM4 multimode fibre cable constructions, as well as standard 62.5/125, 50/125 multimode and singlemode, these plug and play assemblies feature flexible, spiral wrapped aluminium interlocking armour offering over seven times the crush resistance of standard assemblies. This added durability supports rugged-environment intra-building backbone (campus) and horizontal installations and eliminates the need for ducting usually needed to protect non-armoured fibre cable.  Compared to the installation of non-armoured fibre with separate inner duct or conduit, the use of armoured cable can cut installation costs by up to 50 per cent or more for both materials and labour.

Available in 12 to 144 fibre counts in increments of 12 fibres and in custom lengths, Siemon’s armoured plug and play fibre cable assemblies are user-configurable to precise application requirements and efficiently put high-performance, high-density fibre connections exactly where they are needed.

These new armoured fibre cable assemblies join Siemon’s full line of high-performance MTP plug and play fibre optic cabling solutions. Constructed of high-quality fibre optic cable and components for future-proof support of critical links up to 40Gb/s and 100 Gb/s application speeds, the Siemon plug and play system’s factory terminated and tested connections guarantee maximum channel throughput, without the performance variability of field terminations. 

In both armoured and non-armoured varieties, Siemon OM3 and OM4 multimode MTP assemblies have passed independent third-party testing by Experior Labs, confirming 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s readiness and performance margins in accordance with the latest IEC 61280-4-1 Edition 2 standard.  These latest IEC testing procedures use new encircled flux methods, which limit the negative impact on the accuracy of multimode fibre insertion loss and return loss test results. Encircled flux compliance reduces test variability by up to 75 per cent versus the previous test methods, helping eliminate false pass results that can degrade overall network performance. The more accurate encircled flux test methods indicated industry-leading performance margins of up to 60 per cent for all Siemon product tested.

To ensure these high performance levels are maintained in every plug and play assembly, Siemon performs 100 per cent automated end-face inspection of all fibre interfaces to IEC 61300-3-30 Ed 1.0 to limit contaminants and surface defects that significantly degrade system performance.  Siemon also tests all of its multimode plug and play assemblies for insertion loss and return loss in both directions for both 850nm and 1300nm wavelengths and ships individual test results with every assembly.

Volex cable in interoperability live demo with IBTA at SuperComputing 2011

Volex plc (LSE: VLX.L), the global provider of electrical, digital and optical cabling and interconnect solutions, has provided quad small form factor pluggable (QSFP) cable assemblies to support the live demonstration organised by Orange Silicon Valley, the InfiniBand Trade Association and OpenFabrics Alliance at the SuperComputing 2011 conference in Seattle last month.

The world’s first demonstration of a Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA)-enabled data transfer at 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) over wide area network links spanning approximately 7,000 miles included Volex high speed cable assemblies.

“RDMA communication relies on high-quality, high-speed pathways,” said Linda Starr, Senior VP at Volex. “Volex’s 56G QSFP+ cables, as used in this demonstration, meet these requirements.

“As high-speed bulk data transfer wide area network traffic is predicted to increase considerably in future, we are developing solutions for emerging standards like the InfiniBand EDR 104G (4x 26G) QSFP+ standard.”

The 56G QSFP+ cable assemblies from Volex used in the demonstration perfom to the 14G per lane FDR InfiniBand standard. Their high performance and low bit error rate qualify these cable assemblies to support the latest generation of servers in demanding environments. Their special design severely limits any cross talk interference.

Volex experts at the booth also introduced the standard compliant solution for the CXP to CXP 12x10G=120G QDR and other configurations including one CXP to three QSFP+ fan-out hydra cables.

“The SC11 demo in the IBTA and OFA booth illustrated that InfiniBand can be used to efficiently move large data between data centers around the globe,” said Brian Sparks, co-chair of the IBTA Marketing Working Group. “The collaboration between IBTA and OFA members along with the Department of Energy’s Energy Sciences Network has enabled us to show a ‘world’s first’ in terms of data transfer rates over a long distance and provides insight into the types of InfiniBand-enabled solutions you’ll see moving forward.”

Cannon Technologies “Cocooned” at DCD London

At Data Centre Dynamic’s Converged in London 30th November to 1st December 2011 on stand No. 51 Cannon Technologies exhibit their T4 Active Aisle Cocooning solution with within-row chilled water or DX coolers.

Uniquely in the data centre industry, Cannon Technologies’ T4 within-row coolers are a mere 200mm width – taking up a fraction of the space normally needed for within-row cooling.

The solution demonstrated is rated at 30kW per rack although solutions up to 60 KW are already available.

Brand-Rex Receives Rave Reviews at ODEON Cinema Premiers

Back in 1928 Oscar Deutsch, the founder of ODEON Cinemas, opened his first venue in the West Midlands town of Brierley Hill. Fast forward to 2011 and ODEON is the largest chain of cinemas in Europe with 226 venues and 2127 screens.

In 2009 the company decided to embark on a major digital cinema conversion project across its entire UK and Eire estate and used a 10GPlus shielded copper cabling system from Brand-Rex as the core component of its new network infrastructure. 

Brand-Rex Select Partner, J Brand, was appointed to carry out the work and the company’s sales and marketing manager, Paul Jordan, explained, ‘Our challenge was to provide ODEON with a cabling infrastructure capable of supporting network speeds of 10 Gigabit Ethernet. This would allow it to quickly and reliably transfer film between screens within the cinema network and get the best out of the state-of-the-art digital projection equipment being introduced. After discussing the relative merits of shielded and unshielded cable with ODEON, it was decided that the former would be most suitable, owing to its ability to provide an added layer of protection against electromagnetic interference.

The project was run to a rigid schedule and being able to carry out the installations quickly and accurately was incredibly important. In order to make the best use of its time on-site, J Brand’s engineers also used innovations such as the Brand-Rex tool-free RJ-45 Snap-In-Jack for fast and efficient termination. As a result, all the ODEON conversions have opened on schedule.

J Brand completed its work in November 2011 and Jordan concluded, ‘This was a massive undertaking that involved the installation of over 90km of cable and 3,200 links within 112 cinemas. The project was a great success and ODEON now boasts 884 digital screens in the UK and Eire, which is more than any other cinema group and means that cinema goers can enjoy the ultimate visual experience.’

Major Standards Organisations Begin Work on 40Gb/s Twisted-Pair Cabling Specifications

Siemon’s Valerie Maguire reports that both ISO/IEC and TIA have formally initiated projects to develop performance standards for balanced twisted-pair copper cabling capable of supporting 40 Gb/s transmission.

Recent new project approvals in both the ISO/IEC and TIA structured cabling groups have set the stage to allow interest in the specification of 40 Gb/s transmission-ready twisted-pair cabling requirements to quickly gain momentum.  The early volume of expert contributions related to these projects indicates strong industry commitment and investment in copper-based Ethernet for future higher-speed applications and underscores the technical and commercial viability of these solutions.

At the October, 2011 ISO/IEC 11801 meeting in Melbourne, Australia, the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 3 Working Group initiated a new work item proposal (NWIP) to develop requirements for balanced twisted-pair cabling that can support 40 Gb/s data transmission.

Similarly, after initiating a new cabling project to address the need to support greater-than 10 Gb/s transmission in February 2011, the TIA TR-42.7 copper cabling subcommittee formally adopted baseline objectives for next generation cabling performance in October 2011.  These parameters are anticipated to be published in addendum 1 to ANSI/TIA-568-C.2 in 2014.

While both the ISO/IEC and TIA initiatives focus on developing a new class or category of copper cabling to support 40 Gb/s transmission, it is interesting to note that ISO/IEC also plans to develop guidelines describing the 40 Gb/s capacity exhibited by existing classes of cabling.

Xtreme Business Solutions Announced As Siemon UK Certified Installer Of The Year

Siemon, the global network infrastructure specialist, has named Xtreme Business Solutions as it’s ‘UK Certified Installer of the Year 2010”.

The award was presented by Siemon regional sales director Rob Tansley who said, “Xtreme Business Solutions has achieved a 55 per cent year on year growth with its Siemon structured cabling systems business. This would be very impressive at any time, but to achieve this in the current difficult economic climate is quite spectacular.”

Manufacturing investment and new appointments signal a bright future for Brand-Rex

Brand-Rex has demonstrated its commitment to excellence and ongoing development with a six-figure investment in its manufacturing facilities, and the appointment of new staff members to achieve a number of strategic objectives across its operation.

Earlier this year Keith Stentiford joined the company as director of global accounts and he will be developing and managing major end user accounts as well as delivering worldwide partner relationship strategy and vision. Alongside Keith is Jan Erik Juul, who has been appointed to the role of sales director, Nordics. Jan has a wealth of sales and technical knowledge, and his commercial and business acumen will allow Brand-Rex to further develop its presence in this region.

In order to enhance the quality of its world-class production division, Kevin Thorne joins as LAN manufacturing manager. He is responsible for ensuring that business and customer demands are met, and that performance improvements are delivered by effectively utilising the experience of those working in this department.

As highlighted by the announcement that it has achieved carbon neutral status, environmental quality and continual improvement across its entire operation is of paramount importance to Brand-Rex.

To further these objectives, Christopher McFarlane is now the company’s quality manager, taking over responsibility for product quality development, management and improvement. Working with Christopher is Stuart McDonald who, in the role of continuous improvement manager, will be in charge of devising and implementing a strategy to enhance stakeholder engagement, reduce operating costs, improve risk management and drive up efficiencies across the entire business.

Engineering, design and technical excellence has played a massive part in the success of Brand-Rex and this is set to continue as it welcomes Martin McGahon on board as its new technical manager. Martin will be responsible for maximising the current technical resources and minimising the lead-time of product delivery. Also joining this department is Jim Smith as design and development manager for connectivity.

Siemon Launches Category 6 Patch Cords with Reduced Diameter Cable and Ultra-Slim Boot

Siemon, a leading global manufacturer of IT network cabling and infrastructure systems, today announced the next generation of its popular category 6 UTP MC6 patch cord.  Featuring new reduced-diameter cable and low-profile, ultra-slim strain relief boot, the new MC6 cords meet or exceed all category 6 standards.

The redesigned MC6 cords are constructed with a new 250MHz-rated 26 AWG stranded cable that reduces cable diameter, improving cord flexibility while still exceeding the standards set forth by ISO/IEC 11801:2002 and ANSI/TIA-568-C.2. To support a broader range of global regulations and requirements, this high-performance cable features a dual LS0H/CM (Low Smoke Zero Halogen and CM rating from UL in the USA) rated jacket.

Structured cabling specialists Admiral Group win contract to install Brand-Rex 10 Gigabit/s cabling infrastructure for one of the world’s largest international PR company’s prestigious new London offices.

Brand-Rex today announced that its authorised installation partner Admiral Group has been awarded a contract by one of the world’s largest international public relations companies, Burson-Marsteller, to provide the structured cabling infrastructure for its new London Offices.

Burson-Marsteller decided to relocate its London office from Bloomsbury Way to the Legal & General Property and Mitsubishi Estate Company’s Central Saint Giles scheme – a vibrantly coloured building, designed by Renzo Piano.

The project saw a Brand-Rex 10GPlus Category 6A 10 Gigabit/s structured cabling system installed from a series of four centrally located patching cabinets. The cabling was laid on protective matting in under floor voids to maximise space and protect them. Brand-Rex 24 port angled patch panels are also specified to help streamline the installation process.

To plan the communications infrastructure for their move, Burson-Marsteller called in the services of Luton based Admiral Group, whose director, Adam Sullivan comments, “For Burson-Marsteller, efficient and reliable communications is a key requirement for the smooth running of its operation. Admiral’s brief was to specify and install a future proof cabling infrastructure that could provide assured system performance. Therefore, we had no hesitation in recommending the installation of Brand-Rex 10GPlus Category 6A throughout.”

Brand-Rex ‘Ships’ First Products for Prestigious New Aircraft Carriers

Since winning the contract to supply its Blolite blown fibre solution, Brand-Rex has seen work begin in earnest on the first of the two new aircraft carriers currently under construction at the Rosyth Royal Dockyard.

Work is well underway on the new 65,000 tonne Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier that is being built by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), with the first consignments of the innovative Blolite blown optical fibre solution from Brand-Rex now shipped in readiness for installation.

As the largest ships ever built for the Royal Navy, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will provide a 16,000m2 military operating base that can be deployed worldwide. Each carrier will have nine decks, plus a flight deck the size of three football pitches, along with two propellers weighing 33 tonnes and producing a maximum speed of over 25 knots (46km/h).

The ACA is made up of BAE Systems, Babcock, ThalesUKand the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Work on the various sections is taking place at shipyards across the country, involving more than 10,000 people and over 100 different companies.

Completed sections are now being delivered along the Firth of Forth to the Rosyth Royal Dockyard, where they will be assembled with the help of one of theUK’s largest cranes – a 68m structure known as Goliath.

Two of the lower main blocks, together weighing more than 6,000 tonnes and forming part of the base of one ship, have already been delivered and assembly is due to begin shortly. Paul Lines, CEO of Brand-Rex, said, ‘Seeing the components being delivered is fantastic and highlights the scale and importance of this project.’

HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, will be used for operations ranging from supporting war efforts to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief. As the centrepiece ofBritain’s military capability they will operate at least 12 of the carrier variant joint strike fighter jets, allowing for unparalleled interoperability with allied forces.

With this in mind efficient and effective communications is a must, which is why Brand-Rex was awarded the £5m contract by the ACA to provide the complete fibre optic based infrastructure for each craft. After seeing demonstrations of its capabilities, the ACA decided that the Blolite solution would offer the necessary bandwidth, while allowing the network to grow as required.

By being able to upgrade as needed Blolite eliminates the upheaval of having to ‘rip and replace’ existing cabling in the future. Brand-Rex will also provide training for Royal Navy personnel to enable them to blow fibre in an operational theatre, allowing upgrades to the communications infrastructure or damage control to take place without the need to return to port.

When the work is completed all the ships’ IP based communications will run over the system – including voice, data, security and sophisticated aircraft deployment. Paul Lines from Brand-Rex concluded, ‘The benefits of using Blolite on this installation are considerable, and the fact that it can provide the resilience required within the challenging environment of an active aircraft carrier is testament to its quality and effectiveness. Volex is awarded ISO 13485 accreditation for its manufacturing facility in Mexico

Volex plc, the global provider of electrical, digital and optical interconnect solutions, has gained accreditation to the latest ISO 13485 standard for its manufacturing facility in Tijuana, Mexico.  The standard describes the requirements for quality management systems in the manufacturing of medical devices.

Achieving this important industry standard is part of Volex’s commitment to continuous improvement in its manufacturing processes and products. This follows similar accreditations of factories in Europe (Poland) and Asia (China and India).

The ISO 13485 standard can be the differentiating factor in the vendor selection process in healthcare engineering as independent quality auditors will analyse back into the supply chain to establish and prove that the products supplied to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) are of the highest quality. For Volex’s OEM customers the new ISO standard means that applications for accreditation of their own products through organisations like ISO or FDA will be even smoother. Having the ISO 13485 seal of approval validates the quality system in the Tijuana plant and reduces the need for independent audits.

The Volex factory in Tijuana employs over 900 people and produces interconnect solutions for medical applications and devices  like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, ultrasound scanners, cardiac monitors and defibrillators used worldwide in hospitals and clinics.

Siemon Launches Overhead Patching Solution for Data Centres

Global network infrastructure specialist Siemon, has added a new cable-tray mounted rack for overhead patch panels to its line of data centre cable management solutions.  Designed to mount directly to overhead ladder rack or cable tray, Siemon’s cable tray rack delivers 4U of easily installed and accessible 19” rack mount space above cabinets and racks without consuming floor or cabinet space, making it ideal for use within Zone Distribution Areas (ZDAs) or Equipment Distribution Areas (EDAs) in data centres.

Used with copper patch panels or fibre enclosures, the cable tray rack can increase cabling density without sacrificing orderly cable management.  By moving patching fields out of the cabinet itself and into easily accessed overhead spaces, ongoing moves, adds and changes are simplified.  This flexibility can also help speed the deployment of new data centre equipment, allowing pre-cabled connectivity to be installed in overhead spaces and simply connected via patch cords as new cabinets and/or equipment is added.

Siemon cable tray rack’s overhead configuration can also improve data centre thermal efficiency and airflow by minimising obstruction of equipment cooling features due to cabling congestion within the cabinet.

The new product’s unique design allows it to be easily attached to all common overhead cable tray and ladder rack systems and can be mounted below, flush or above cable tray in both parallel and perpendicular configurations.  The product includes Siemon’s high capacity quarter-turn twist-lock cable managers, which lock into place quickly without use of screws or mounting tools and can be easily located to provide customised cable management.

Siemon’s cable tray rack provides 4U of standard CEA-310-E 19 inch (480mm) mounting space and offers a 27kg load rating to easily accommodate a wide range of panel types.  Supplied with M6 cage nuts, this RoHS and cULus 1863 compliant rack is constructed using a durable 12 gauge cold-rolled steel frame with a smooth black powder coat finish for a clean appearance within data centre environments.
