Brand-Rex announced as European Business Awards Finalist

Brand-Rex, the leading data networking solutions provider, has been announced as one of twelve UK finalists for the 2014 European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE).

The company’s entry into the awards is a direct result of its success in the prestigious Scottish VIBES Awards (Vision In Business for the Environment in Scotland) in the Management category in 2011 and the Energy Management and Efficiency category last year.

“We are proud to have been selected as one of the only four UK finalists in the Management category”, said Martin Hanchard, CEO, Brand-Rex. “It is testament to the efforts of the team to achieve such international recognition for our efforts to make Brand-Rex the most sustainable network cabling company.”.

“For Brand-Rex, environmental considerations are a firm part of technology and innovation processes. Feedback from our customers and partners encourages us to continue this way. I would encourage every company to follow our lead as properly managed ecology actually pays dividends in profitability as well as global citizenship.”

The EBAE awards are presented by the European Commission every two years and aim to recognise and reward European companies that set an example by successfully bringing together innovation, economic viability and environmental concerns.

Brand-Rex technology and sustainability manager Kennedy Miller adds: ”We take our environmental responsibility very seriously and have an audited track record to prove it.

“Our environmental processes and policies already go further than legally required and we intend to stay ahead in years to come.”

There are four award categories in which companies are rewarded for management practices, products, processes and international business cooperation activities that contribute to economic and social development without detriment to the environment.  Brand-Rex is competing in the Management category for the The Pathway to Carbon Neutrality and 2015 for 2020: 20 Steps we can make by 2015 for a better vision of our future projects and will compete on the European stage against winners from 28 countries.

About the European Business Awards for the Environment:

The European Business Awards for the Environment were established by the European Commission Environment Directorate-General in 1987.

EBAE activities take place at both national and European levels, with participation open to companies from all EU Member States and candidate countries. Companies must first succeed in their national competition, before they can participate in the bi-annual European Business Awards for the Environment. Submission of entries is managed by national coordinating bodies. This two-level process means EBAE winners are the best of the best: the most far-sighted, responsible and innovative companies in Europe.

Brand-Rex scales the heights at Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower

Brand-Rex has been awarded a project to provide network infrastructure for the prestigious Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower, further demonstrating its strength in the Middle East region and in particular its commitment to the Qatar market.

Currently undergoing construction in the prestigious West Bay district of Doha in the state of Qatar, Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower will be a state-of-the-art hotel and residential apartment building. As the most recently developed area of the city, West Bay is home to some of its tallest and most impressive buildings, with 40 storeys within its striking design, Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower will be in good company.

Located close to the beach in what is the diplomatic centre of Doha, the area attracts some of the city’s top executives and government officials. Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower’s owners will be looking to appeal to this demographic and therefore the project’s design consultant, MZ & Partners, is making every effort to ensure that it contains the very best building services infrastructure, incorporating the latest technology.

The consultants, MZ & Partners and main contractor SAK Trading & Contracting recognised early on in the design phase that in order to create an ‘intelligent building’ the correct IT network infrastructure would be vital. They demanded a network cabling system capable of supporting network speeds of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, in order to support a diverse array of building services technology including wired and wireless Internet, IP security and access control.

After completing a tender process, local IT expert, Zerone Technologies, was awarded the contract to specify, design, supply and install a suitable network infrastructure. The company’s senior sales manager, Sourabh Singh, explains, ‘We have developed an excellent reputation for our ability to provide best in class technology for a range of projects and boast a dedicated and highly motivated service oriented team. After listening to the requirements of MZ & Partners I had no hesitation in recommending a solution from Brand-Rex comprising 10GPlus copper for the horizontal connectivity and premises distribution cables (PDC) from the company’s FibrePlus portfolio for the backbone.’

Zerone Technologies has worked with Brand-Rex for many years and, as a Premier Partner, is able to issue its globally renowned 25-year system warranty. Singh comments, ‘We have completed many installations of 10GPlus and have always been thoroughly impressed with its capabilities. The warranty means that our customers have peace of mind that their chosen solution will perform as expected for the lifetime of the installation.’

10GPlus is a 3P (Third Party Testing) approved cabling system that not only meets and exceeds the performance outlined in EIA/TIA for Category 6A, but also meets and exceeds requirements in ISO/IEC for Class EA. The 10GPlus system therefore has unparalleled levels of certification and is manufactured in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001:2008.

After discussing the relative merits of shielded and unshielded cable, it was decided to use the latter. Asked why, Alaa Habanjar, country manager for Qatar, Kuwait and Levant?at Brand-Rex, replies, ‘Although there was some initial concern regarding the ability of unshielded twisted pair to achieve 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance due to alien crosstalk issues, Brand-Rex 10GPlus U/UTP has a unique Reuleaux shaped cable that reduces interference from adjacent cables and incorporates very highly balanced pairs. Its performance is also independently verified in 100m length testing for both the cable and the channel configurations.’

As well as installing 10GPlus, the specification also called for a fibre optic cabling backbone. Sourabh Singh says, ‘We wanted a solution that offered high levels of resilience and, due to the building’s use, an outstanding level of fire safety performance. The PDC range from Brand-Rex met all of these requirements and more.’

The Brand-Rex PDC products are compact and provider excellent tensile performance. The cables are based on a 900?m tight-buffered fibre. The universal construction enables them to be used internally and externally without the need for transition cable joints. With a low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) construction, they will be installed in the entire backbone of Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower’s network and directly terminated at a consolidation points.

With the building programme currently on schedule, the project will be completed by 2016. The final word goes to Zerone Technologies’ Sourabh Singh, who concludes, ‘The network cabling infrastructure we are installing using products from Brand-Rex will ensure that Al Abdul Wahab Gholam Tower is able to offer its occupants the very best communications platform, while maximising the potential of its building services technology.’

Research shows Data Centre Space Take-Up Jumps 18 Per Cent

Gateway Data Centre Exterior

Gateway Data Centre Exterior

Research just released by GVA Connect, the data centre specialist division of property agents GVA, showed UK take-up of data centre space amounted to 830,000 square feet (gross retail area) in calendar year 2013.

“This represented an 18 per cent jump in data centre space take-up over the previous year,” said GVA Connect director Charles Carden, adding that the company expected take-up to remain at this level during 2014.

Confirming London’s position as a leading international data centre hub, Carden revealed that over three quarters of the 2013 data centre take-up was within the so-called London Synchronous Locations (locations which deliver round-trip latency of under three milliseconds).  The second most popular location was Manchester with the remainder of take-up spread across the UK.

Said Carden, ‘Not only does this research indicate a very healthy increase in data centre activity, the average power requirement – at over 500kw – demonstrates that the majority of these new projects are of a very significant size.

GVA Connect sees these figures as a very sound indicator of continued occupier confidence declaring that this follows-on from the steep rise in both the number and size of enquiries they reported in Q4/13.

“We continue to see an increase in serious enquiries from US operators for space in both UK and right across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa),” said Carden.

Availability

Availability of data centre space in the London Zone is illustrated by new data centre space such as Gateway in London’s West Thurrock (gatewaydatacentre.co.uk).  This has the ability to deliver up to 86,000 square feet of data halls, 50MVA of diverse power, excellent connectivity and 2.0ms round trip latency to the City of London. Similar opportunities currently exist at both London’s Bracknell and Perivale data centres (bracknellandperivaledc.com) which, like Gateway are available as Shell and Core, Powered Shell or can be delivered as Fully Fitted data centres to specific customer requirements.

Also currently available are self-contained opportunities within existing established London region data centres such as 30,000 to 50,000 sqft of space at Heathrow in West London with 41MVA of power and 50,000 sqft at Croydon in South London with dual 10MVA potential. (gvaconnect.com/heathrow   gvaconnect.com/croydon ).

In the regions too there are data centre opportunities such as the Portal Data Centre in Nottingham with excellent connectivity, existing clients on lease plus planning consents to expand to 70,000 sqft of gross space with power expandable to over 10MVA via diverse feeds.

Rising trend

GVA Connect also reports a further rising trend in interest for data centre space from corporate users, cloud service providers and media-related businesses – indicating a relaxation in IT budgets as we move into 2014.

Carden added, “We anticipate enquiry and activity levels remaining steady at this higher level throughout 2014 with transactional activity driven by USA operators in Q3/14 and Q4/14. With GVA Connect being  the leading data centre property agency we are ideally placed to assist with both lettings and acquisitions during what promises to be a high-activity year.”

Raritan Solves The Intelligent PDU Retrofit Problem Without Downtime

Raritan, leader in high accuracy intelligent power monitoring and metering has designed a completely new retrofit power monitoring system suitable for both new and existing data centres. The technology is designed for ‘live’ installation, without any need for downtime or business interruption.

Operators of legacy data centres often look enviously at more modern facilities with intelligent power distribution units (PDUs) and their metering and monitoring reports. Without these modern systems, data centre  operators cannot easily tell how much additional equipment they can safely put in a rack – or how dangerously close they are to tripping a circuit breaker. (If a circuit breaker trips a whole rack or even row could lose power – with disastrous results for services and customers).

The problem in most legacy data centres has been that retrofitting in-line PDU’s involves downtime, which is normally unacceptable. Until now, that is.

Launching the new product, Raritan’s Richard May said, “Raritan’s new BCM (Branch Circuit Monitoring) needs no downtime for installation. It uses high accuracy split-core clamps that simply attach around existing supply cables.  The data from these clamps is combined with voltage monitoring information.  The non-invasive BCM installation then supplies the business with invaluable data including, power (kW), apparent power (kVA), energy (kWh) plus power factor (PF) as well as load balance on three-phase systems.”

Each Raritan BCM unit can monitor the incoming single phase or three phase feeds to a distribution panel plus up to 21 tributary or branch circuits to the rack’s A&B feed PDUs.

Multiple BCM units are connected together for larger panels and network connections are made using Wi-Fi or RJ45. Utilising industry standard SNMP protocols, the unit cleanly integrates into existing management and data collection systems.

Information is Power

Raritan BCM integrates direct to the Raritan Power IQ and dcTrack management software systems in exactly the same way as intelligent PDUs in new data centres.

This means that by the non-intrusive installation of Raritan BCM and either Power IQ or dcTrack software, legacy data centres can now easily have the full functionality enjoyed by newer facilities:

–       An increase in available power by ensuring that branch circuits are suitably loaded but never overloaded.

–       Avoiding pockets of ‘stranded’ (and hence un-used) power, maximising your data centre investment.

–       A complete, accurate view of branch circuit loading

–       Improved balance of loads

–       Monitoring and ensuring that breaker-trips are avoided except in true emergencies.

–       Accurately bill customers/users or user departments for energy usage.

–       Accurately measure PUE

–       Support energy saving and ‘green’ initiatives.

Brand-Rex Appoints Aldo Strawbridge to Top Regional Post for Middle East

Aldo Strawbridge Brand-Rex Middle East Regional Sales DirectorFollowing recent growth in the Middle East, data networking solutions provider Brand-Rex, is delighted to announce the appointment of Aldo Strawbridge as Regional Sales Director.

Taking up his post in August, Aldo will be based out of the Brand-Rex Regional HQ in Dubai. With partners in 12 countries throughout the region, he expects to spend much of his time visiting customers over the first few months to gain a detailed understanding of their needs and challenges.

Aldo Strawbridge said, “Information and communication technology is at the heart of every organisation’s activities. In the Middle East we are seeing a significant increase in demand. A major driver is the requirement for new infrastructure solutions resulting from the convergence of CCTV, building management, security and access control systems to Internet Protocol (IP). Instead of deploying five or six separate cabling networks through the entire building, just a single converged network is needed. This leads to significant cost savings and improved system integration. Brand-Rex has been developing IP/Ethernet structured cabling solutions for over two decades and is at the forefront of converged network solutions.”

Aldo will join Brand-Rex from NEC UK where he previously held the role of Director of Sales and Service Operations. Aldo has been involved in the telecoms industry for over 35 years and brings with him experience of the Middle East market, having previously worked for Lucent Technologies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Announcing the appointment, Brand-Rex CEO Martin Hanchard said,
“I am delighted to welcome Aldo to the Brand-Rex team. His extensive business development and industry experience will be pivotal to help drive our plans to extend our reach throughout the Middle East and to continue to provide our customers with excellent support and service. Brand-Rex takes centre stage at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama

Guildhall Milton Court1, Brand-Rex, the leading supplier of copper and fibre optic based network infrastructure solutions for enterprises, data centres and extreme environments, is proud to announce that its products and systems have been used extensively within the Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s new £90m Milton Court facility in London.

Offering aspiring musicians, actors, stage managers and theatre technicians a creative and stimulating environment in which to develop as artists and professionals, Milton Court is a state-of-the-art teaching and performance building and, as such, it requires the best possible network infrastructure for its staff, students and visitors.

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s Head of IT, Richard Antonel, was charged with overseeing the implementation of a network infrastructure that could provide the highest possible levels of performance and future proofing. He explained, ‘The scope was to install a high specification structured cabling system that would last in excess of 25 years. We decided to install 10Gbit/s to every outlet. After carrying out research I decided the Brand-Rex 10GPlus Category 6A system would offer the best combination of value, reliability and longevity.’

Chris Chandler, technical manager at Brand-Rex, who advised on the system design commented, ‘For this environment a shielded foil twisted pair (F/FTP) low smoke zero halogen (LSOH) cable was the most appropriate option due to the quantity of electrical services in the building that could cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). Over 150km of it was used to configure 2,000 10GBASE-T channels and, in addition, singlemode (OS2) and multimode (OM4) optical fibre from our FibrePlus range has been used in the campus wide area network (WAN) and internal backbones respectively.’

A truly converged multimedia environment, as well as running data, voice and video conferencing applications, the IT infrastructure at Milton Court has to be able to handle the many radio and TV broadcasts that will be made from the new facilities as well as supporting the Guildhall’s recording studios for sound and video. It will also facilitate a large digital signage system, as well as wireless networking to accommodate the increasing preference for ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) functionality amongst students. It is also used to network a building management system (BMS) that operates access control, CCTV, and heating and ventilation.

As a third party tested and approved cabling system, 10GPlus not only meets and exceeds the performance outlined in EIA/TIA for Category 6A, but also meets and exceeds requirements in ISO/IEC for Class EA. The 10GPlus system therefore has unparalleled levels of certification and is manufactured in accordance with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001:2008.

Antonel is confident that Milton Court’s communications infrastructure will fully support the technologies of the future. He concluded, ‘Milton Court will open in September and I know that its network infrastructure will perfectly complement and enhance the outstanding quality of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s training and the success of its graduates.’

Brand-Rex, which also won a Green Apple award in September last year, became the first cabling company in the world to achieve Global Carbon Neutral status for its worldwide operations back in 2011 and in 2012 it was the first company in its sector to launch carbon-neutral products.

The Green IT Awards 2013, which were supported by the UK Government’s department of Energy and Climate Change, set out to showcase and reward the organisations that have made the most significant contribution to improving the IT industry’s environmental performance over the preceding 12 months.

Amongst the judging criteria winners were required to demonstrate ethical management practices – including showing they went ‘beyond the call of duty’ and that its ‘green’ efforts are reflected in its advertising, marketing and sales – to help increase visibility of the topic throughout the industry.

Said Miller, “Taking the environmental approach to business is not just an add-on it requires a complete transformation in thinking across an organisation. Far too many companies have failed to grasp the idea that once you’ve done a full environmental audit – it immediately shows you where you can cut costs and improve profits.

“To be judged in the same league as Dell is a massive honour and recognition of the foresight of the staff, management and the whole supply-chain at Brand-Rex. My profound thanks go to them all.”

‘Rain Umbrella’ For Computer Servers Wins US Patent – And Sees Orders Triple Post SuperStorm Sandy

DCME0014_TurtleShellServerShield - An UmbrellaTo KeepWaterAnd DebrisOff DelicateEquipmentWhenLeaks AndStormsOccurAbove-W600Hundreds of thousands of data centers and server rooms are in multi-tenanted buildings across the US and elsewhere. Within them, critical computer servers and telecommunications equipment are regularly damaged by water dripping – and sometimes cascading – through ceilings from leaking or burst pipes on the floors above.

And worse: In storm-prone areas, it is only too frequent for roof-damage to allow water to come flooding in (even when the roof is several floors up) – causing widespread destruction of the server equipment and disruption to businesses.

An invention called the Turtle Shell server shield – effectively a massive umbrella for data center servers and telecoms racks – is already protecting thousands of servers around the US and as far afield as Norway and Pakistan.

Completely innovative, the Turtle Shell server shield has just been granted US patent number 8,413,385 in recognition of its uniqueness.

Glenn Mahoney, president at Turtle Shell Industries, and his team have been developing the product for four years – with considerable success.

Said Mahoney, “We’ve been called to many disaster sites where storms and pipe bursts have sent water cascading through the ceiling and right through $millions-worth of server and telecoms equipment – not only interrupting vital business operations but in most cases damaging the equipment beyond repair. It’s a highly distressing sight to see”.

“In one such situation – a major cable operator’s network center in New York – thousands of customers were offline because of the water damage. While the center was being rebuilt, the operator asked us to fit Turtle Shells, as one of several new disaster precautions. Less than two years later torrential storms hit again but even the newly reinforced roof gave way and water came cascading through again. However this time, the unique Turtle Shell ‘umbrellas’ kept the water out of the electronics and the equipment kept on working. With $millions worth of equipment saved to carry on earning revenue.”

You can see an amazing video of both the first and the second storm damage as this NYC data center is struck in 2008 and 2010 at ‘Turtle Shell in action’ here: http://turt.co/dcme14.

Turtle Shells are made from a very strong polycarbonate and shaped like a sideways “(“ extended over the full length of each suite or racks.

They can be installed over, under and around all manner of cables, conduits and support rods or brackets. Once installed Turtle Shells are total watertight. They can also be fitted with flexible curtains which can be operated manually or automatically to ensure that water doesn’t splash into the front and rear of racks.

“We’ve seen a 300 percent raise in sales since October,” said Mahoney. “As people on the East coast are recovering from super storm Sandy they are thinking seriously about how to build-in extra disaster protection. And Turtle Shells are proving to be the ideal solution not just for data centers, but telecoms and cable operators, hospitals, schools, universities and Government sites too.”

Fifth Year At The Top For Brand-Rex

Martin Hanchard CEO Brand-RexFor the fifth year running Brand-Rex, the data networks solutions provider has re-affirmed its leadership position in the UK market for volume of structured cabling systems sold.

The latest independent market research report conducted by specialist building consultants BSRIA – shows Brand-Rex shipping a significant 15 per cent more ‘outlets’ than its closest rival. In product terms. ‘Outlets’ represent complete system solutions, incorporating copper data cables, patch panels, patch cords and outlet sockets.

Martin Hanchard, CEO at Brand-Rex commented, “It is very pleasing to note that although certain manufacturers sell more cable kilometres and others more component units, Brand-Rex remains the preferred UK supplier for fully integrated solutions.“

According to the research, Brand-Rex has 18.6 per cent of the UK market by volume with 1.33 million outlets sold in 2012 compared to the market total of 7.13 million.

A star performer for Brand-Rex last year was its Data Centre Zone Cable product. Thinner than competing 10Gigabit/s cables this innovation has been a real success with installers. By reducing overcrowding in equipment racks and solving the problems of conventional cables blocking under-floor flows of vital refrigerated air, end users and system integrators can more efficiently plan their Data Networks.

“We have secured exciting new UK contracts including Manchester City FC’s new training ground; media companies MTV and Viacom; Odeon Cinemas; The Welsh Assembly; and the South Glasgow Super-Hospital. Brand-Rex has also supported many of the London Olympics venues,” said Hanchard.

Despite the challenging economic climate in the UK, Brand-Rex continues to invest heavily in new product development – evidenced by the launch of its Fibre Superset, a complete range of 10 to 40 Gigabit migratable and 10-to-40-to-100 Gigabit migratable products. Unlike most products these are designed for in-situ re-configuration to higher speeds providing for the much sought after future proofing required by network managers and specifiers.

“Brand-Rex environmental credentials continue to contribute substantially to the company’s success. Brand-Rex leads the industry,” said Hanchard, “we were first in the world to be able to state that our complete global operations were carbon neutral and continue to challenge ourselves every day to further develop this competitive advantage.”

Brand-Rex launches 10GPlus PCB Patch Panel Set

Brand-Rex, the leading supplier of copper and fibre optic based network infrastructure solutions for enterprises, data centres and extreme environments, has introduced its new 10 Gigabit Ethernet PCB Patch Panel Set. It has been developed to maximise flexibility in data centre design by providing a high-density solution that has plug and play functionality.

Part of the company’s innovative 10GPlus portfolio, the PCB Patch Panel Set has been developed in response to the increasing use of 10 Gigabit Ethernet within the data centre. It comprises a ½U shielded patch panel, a 1U shielded patch panel and a consolidation point module. The PCB construction complements the existing Brand-Rex modular Snap-In-Jack 10 Gigabit Ethernet patch panels and the modules can also be pre-terminated off-site.

Supporting 24 ports and delivering true Category 6A/Class EA performance, the 10GPlus PCB ½U patch panel is perfect for applications where space is at a premium and a high-density solution with maximum airflow is required. Eddie McGinley, product manager at Brand-Rex, explained: ‘It is compatible with all standard 19 inch racks and cabinets, enabling 48 terminations in just a single U. Our new patch panel also meets the specific demands of customers that require a very high port density in the smallest possible area.’

The 10GPlus PCB ½U patch panel is designed with four shielded modular units each comprising six ports, and an easy to remove cover that allows the modules to be removed from the panel when required. All panels are backward compatible with Category 5e and Category 6 systems to enable future proofing, and the panel has also been designed with a cable management/strain relief feature built into the rear.

Like the ½U version, the 10GPlus PCB 1U patch panel is supplied with cable ties, mounting accessories and short form installation instructions. Both have plug and play modules that can be interchanged and separated from the patch panel. Although they can be pre-terminated off-site, they also offer a conventional termination method and are fitted with LSA punch down blocks as standard. All ports are identified numerically for both TIA 568 A and B wiring applications and have an additional writeable surface for ease of port numbering.

The 10GPlus PCB consolidation point (CP) comprises six RJ45 ports and can be supplied as a low profile stand-alone module or with mounting brackets. This allows for secure fixing under floors or walls. The cover can be easily removed to gain access to the LSA insulation displacement connectors (IDC) and screen clamps for termination, while the module base and cover are made from a metallised plastic which offers a lightweight construction and excellent screening characteristics.

‘By introducing the 10GPlus PCB Patch Panel Set Brand-Rex offers a high density solution that can fully support the growth of 10 Gigabit Ethernet in high-end applications,’ concluded McGinley. ‘Combined with our world renowned manufacturing excellence, it is part of our ongoing commitment to provide best in class solutions that meet every requirement of the modern data centre.’

Brand-Rex Celebrates 40 Years Of Success

Brand-Rex, the leading supplier of copper and fibre optic based network infrastructure solutions for enterprises, data centres and extreme environments, has reached a significant milestone in its illustrious history by celebrating 40 years in business. The company will take a nostalgic look back as it commemorates four decades of manufacturing excellence with staff, partners and customers over the coming months.

Brand-Rex Ltd was founded in 1972 as a joint venture between Brand-Rex Corporation and British Enkalon to manufacture computer based cabling. Several locations were shortlisted for the company before the ‘new town’ of Glenrothes in Scotland was finally chosen as it already had a large number of high technology companies in the local area and could support industrial growth. Brand-Rex Ltd has remained there ever since and is now one of the town’s largest employers.

The company opened its doors with an initial staff of just 25 – a far cry from the 300 employees that it has in 2012. One member of that original group, George Wright has been employed by Brand-Rex ever since and he and his colleagues were all given £40 worth of vouchers to celebrate this occasion.

The company spent much of the 1970s developing its ethos of manufacturing excellence and, as a result, was soon appointed as a major supplier to IBM in the UK, France and Germany. The 1980s and 1990s brought more success and it launched its first Category 5 cable range in 1992 and then the GigaPlus Category 5e range of solutions in 1997.

After going through various changes of ownership, the new century saw Brand-Rex focus its attention on developing a series of solutions that would cement its position as the premier structured cabling supplier. Installers, consultants and end users looking for ultimate performance and future proofing capabilities welcomed solutions including Cat6Plus in 2002 and 10GPlus in 2006.

In 2008 Brand-Rex was purchased by Murray Capital – bringing the ownership of the company back to Scotland – and has since gone from strength to strength, achieving year-on-year growth thanks to innovative high density solutions including the groundbreaking 10GPlus Zone Cable.

Throughout its history Brand-Rex has always prided itself on its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and it recently invested a six-figure sum in its production infrastructure, including the redesign of its engineering and technical office space to double its capacity. The company has also forged an enviable reputation for its environmental credentials and in 2011 announced that its global organisational and operational activities had achieved Carbon Neutral Status in accordance with PAS 2060.

‘The last 40 years have been a remarkable time for Brand-Rex and a look back over the company’s history brings home what a truly unique, innovative and world class organisation it is,’ commented Paul Lines, Brand-Rex CEO. ‘Our determination to exceed our customers’ expectations through a combination of innovation, unrivalled levels of service and manufacturing excellence has served us magnificently over this time and we look forward to continuing to develop the very best products and systems for the next 40 years and beyond.’

Brand-Rex’s Environmental Initiatives Bear Fruit With A Green Apple Award

Brand-Rex, the leading supplier of copper and fibre optic based network infrastructure solutions for enterprises, data centres and extreme environments, has received a Green Apple Award for its pioneering environmental achievements.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the UK’s major source of recognition for environmental endeavour. The Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.

2012 marked the first time there has been a separate event for Scotland and judges were drawn from the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland, the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and other independent bodies.

Brand-Rex was presented with its Green Apple Award at a glittering presentation ceremony held at Edinburgh Castle. It will now be further assessed with a view to representing Scotland in the European Business Awards for the Environment and will also have the chance to take part in the UK Green Apple Awards at the House of Commons in November.

The company has a long history of environmental awareness and has industry leading green credentials. In 2011 it announced that its global organisational and operational activities had achieved Carbon Neutral Status in accordance with PAS 2060 and it was subsequently announced as a winner at the 2011 VIBES (Vision In Business for the Environment of Scotland) Management Awards.

Initiatives recognised by the awards panel included the replacement of conventional ‘always-on’ factory lighting with daylight and intelligent top-up low energy electric light; replacing the factory’s fuel-oil by natural gas (saving £78,000 per quarter in the process); Over the last year the company has also invested in energy efficient gas heating and optimised its use of this resource by adjusting its building controls programme and relocating room thermostats. The decision to change its roof light panels has also brought energy saving benefits as the additional sunlight coming through gives free heat in the winter which has achieved an immediate winter saving of over £300 per week.

Also acknowledged was the Brand-Rex social responsibility in choosing offset programmes in the countries most impacted by the company’s raw materials sourcing.

For example, a land-fill methane flaring project in Chile – where the copper for their cables is mined and a hydro-dam project in Turkey where the copper is purified.

Over the preceding year, Brand-Rex increased production by 29 million metres of cable but still turned-in an overall carbon footprint reduction of 141 tonnes. An equivalent saving of 1330 tonnes compared to pre-improvement figures.

Collecting the Green Apple Award on behalf of Brand-Rex was the company’s development manager, Kennedy Miller, who commented, ‘Sustainability is at the very heart of our operation and we try to encourage environmental awareness and activity amongst all of our stakeholders and business partners. Having our efforts recognised in the form of a Green Apple Award highlights the importance of this ethos and gives us the drive and determination to do even more to reduce our carbon footprint.’
